Officially formed at New York’s Binghamton University in the fall of 2004, Sinister Yu is the result of five different musical backgrounds joining to create a new and innovative garage-rock/groove-blues sound. The band (vocalist/guitarist Justin Lloyd, vocalist/drummer Kevin Guay, guitarist Joe Sandberg, Bassist Michael Nash and saxophonist Ben Wood) quickly became local staples, consistently performing to packed clubs and venues around New York’s southern tier. In 2005, Sinister Yu won the Binghamton University Battle of the Bands and shared the stage with nationally known ska band Less Than Jake. Described by Binghamton’s Pipe Dream as “mesmerizing and melodic,” and lauded for their “long, arching transitions from blues-esque to rock,” the band quickly attracted a devoted following in New York City, becoming regulars at influential Greenwich Village venues.
By 2006, Sinister Yu made a made a name for themselves at several popular New York colleges and universities, shared the stage with Epic recording artist Justin King and independently released their own album, “Literally.” With their increasing fan base an explosive live show and a polished, eclectic sound capable of appealing to a variety of audiences, Sinister Yu is poised to become a force in today’s music world
